The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme provides financial assistance to individuals aspiring to become teachers. Funza Lushaka Bursary Applications Requirements –
- South African citizenship is a requirement.
- A valid South African ID number is necessary.
- Applicants must be 30 years old or younger if it is their first time applying.
- Acceptance into a B.Ed degree or PGCE program, specializing in at least 2 priority subject areas, is mandatory. Extended programs are not covered.
- Admission to a public university in South Africa is a prerequisite.
- A strong academic record is essential.
- Applicants must be willing to teach at any school chosen by the Provincial Education Department (PED).
- Individuals who are Higher Education Institution employees, or spouses, dependents, or children of such employees, are not eligible.
- A commitment and passion for a teaching career, including an interest in working with youth, enthusiasm for teaching, and readiness to face challenges with integrity, are required.
- Applicants must not possess any other teaching qualifications.
- A criminal record is not allowed.
- Charges of misconduct are not permitted.
- Applicants must not have been dismissed from previous employment.
Requirements for first-time university students –
- Successfully completed Matric with excellent grades or qualifications that meet the criteria for university admission.
- Attained specific levels of achievement in the Matric subjects relevant to your intended teaching field.
- If focusing on the Foundation Phase, you must have achieved certain marks in Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, as well as your Home Language.
- If specializing in the Intermediate Phase, you must have obtained specific marks in Mathematics, Science, and your Home Language.
- For Technology subjects, a minimum mark in Mathematics or Technical Mathematics is required.
- If the university has higher requirements than the bursary, the university’s requirements take precedence.
For New University Students –
1. Successfully passed all subjects in the previous year of study.
2. Maintained a certain average score across all subjects taken.
3. Achieved a higher average in subjects directly related to your chosen teaching specialization.
For PGCE Students –
1. Completed a qualifying degree for the PGCE program.
2. Pursuing studies for teaching in Grades 7 to 12.
3. Completed specific modules in your priority subjects at designated levels to qualify for teaching them.

To be considered for the Funza Lushaka bursary for the 2024 academic year, please adhere to the following instructions:
- Visit the e-Government Portal website.
- Register for an account by inputting your personal particulars.
- Sign in using the username and password you have set up.
- Select the “Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme” from the e-Services Menu.
- Input the OTP (One-Time Password) that was sent to you.
- Carefully review and accept the Terms and Conditions.
- Navigate to the “2024 application” tab on your profile.
- Complete all mandatory fields with accurate information.
- Validate your details by agreeing to the declaration.
